An Introduction to Lasik Surgery

If you hate wearing glasses or contacts to correct your vision there is another alternative. Lasik surgery is a procedure used to improve vision and eliminate the need for corrective lenses. The word Lasik is an acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. During this procedure, the cornea shape is permanently altered. When this procedure is done correctly the chances are the patient will experience improved vision and freedom from glasses or contact lenses. However like every medical procedure there are both benefits and risks. It is important to educate yourself on these benefits and risks before deciding upon Lasik.

The benefits of laser Lasik surgery are evident. People who suffer from poor vision can see clearly without the need for contacts or glasses. This means you don't have to spend money on these corrective vision items or worry about misplacing them. During exercise or physical activity glasses can slip and even fall off, not to mention their inconvenience when swimming. Contact lenses are a bit more convenient than glasses but they can be torn or dropped easily and must be replaced every so often depending on what kind you wear.

Now that we've covered the benefits of Lasik eye surgery let's take a look at the potential risks. Every type of surgery carries a level of risk and Lasik is no exception. In some cases, patients who have this surgery may experience loss of vision rather than improvement. There may also be vision problems that affect sight in the dark such as halo, glare and/or double vision. Also some patients may not experience perfect eyesight after Lasik and may require additional surgery or even the corrective lenses they hoped to avoid.
